Pukei-Pukei is weak to Fire and Thunder. Break the head first and bring a Bow if you want the cleanest first clear. Cut the tail and the poison gets shorter.
Field notes
Pukei-Pukei overview
Pukei-Pukei's fight is a lesson in lane control. Its poison spit can cover a wide cone, the tongue can drag you back into the danger zone, and the tail adds another projectile angle. Cutting the tail and breaking the head reduces both the poison pressure and the monster's reach.
Fire is the best general element. As with most poison monsters, the answer is not to tank the status but to avoid the obvious tell and cleanse early. The wings are easy targets for ranged weapons; melee should stay at the hip and wait for the tongue recovery.

Hunt plan
How to beat Pukei-Pukei
Strafe the poison cone
The poison spit starts with a visible inhale. Move perpendicular to the head and close the gap after the first volley. Do not run directly at the mouth; the cone can be angled at the last moment.
Punish the tongue
The tongue has a long recovery. When it snaps forward and retracts, move in from the side and hit the head or tail. The move is also a good indicator that the next attack will be a projectile, so keep one eye on the mouth.
Cut the tail for safer spacing
The tail is a poison delivery vector. Severing it reduces the number of angles you need to watch and awards a valuable material. Aim for the tail when the monster is pinned or recovering from a tongue attack.
Radiant Pukei-Pukei adds area denial
Radiant Pukei-Pukei is confirmed in the closed beta. Its poison and Radiantite combine into persistent ground hazards. Keep moving after each volley and prioritize the tail cut so you have fewer poison tools to track.

Radiant form & variant notes
Radiant Pukei-Pukei is a confirmed transformed hunt. Radiant Pukei-Pukei is confirmed in the Aesoland roster. It combines poison with Radiantite ground hazards. The tail remains the best tactical break; bring ranged pressure if you struggle to read the overlapping poison pools.
Radiant rule
Carry the base weakness but plan for the new hazard. A safe clear with slightly lower damage is better than a perfect elemental build that spends half the fight healing. Read the Radiant species guide.
Preparation
Pukei-Pukei checklist
- Fire is the primary weakness; Thunder is a good alternative.
- Move sideways against the poison cone.
- Cut the tail to remove another attack angle.
- Bring antidotes or Poison Resistance for a safer run.
First-clear rule
Pick one break, one element and one safe punish. Do not try to optimize the entire hunt before you have survived it once.
