Rathian is weak to Dragon and Thunder and Water. Break the head first and bring a Long Sword if you want the cleanest first clear. Cut the tail before the flip lands.
Field notes
Rathian overview
Rathian is the ground-based half of the iconic pair. She charges, bites and whips the tail, then punishes close pursuit with a backflip that is far more dangerous than it looks. The tail is central to the fight, both as a threat and as the first break target.
Dragon is the best element. Thunder and Water remain usable. Break a wing for the armor pieces, but the tail cut is the change that makes the fight feel manageable. Watch the head lift and the body dip before the flip.

The recommended break order is: 1. Head, 2. Left wing, 3. Right wing, 4. Tail. This is the safest sequence for a typical first hunt. If your armor or weapon recipe needs a specific part, target that break and leave the rest for a later run.

Hunt plan
How to beat Rathian
Cut the tail to remove the arc
The tail is used for sweeps and poison delivery. Sever it after a charge recovery or a topple. A cut tail turns the backflip into a much smaller problem and opens the head for longer windows.
Read the backflip before it starts
A sharp head lift and body dip precede the flip. Strafe to the side rather than backing up. If you are behind the monster when it starts, roll toward the hip and keep the camera on the descending tail.
Break a wing for materials
Rathian wings are required for several armor pieces and can be broken with ranged pressure or a safe landing combo. Do not sacrifice a tail opportunity for a speculative wing hit; prioritize the tactical break first.
Radiant Rathian raises the poison pressure
Radiant Rathian has more developed venom glands and stronger mobility. Bring poison mitigation, cut the tail as early as possible and avoid starting a long combo when the head is low to the ground.
Radiantite watch
Radiant form & variant notes
Radiant Rathian is a confirmed transformed hunt. Radiant Rathian is confirmed and uses a more aggressive venom package. Its mobility is increased and the tail attacks come out faster. The tail cut is still the best way to reduce the danger; do it before chasing a wing break.
Radiant rule
Carry the base weakness but plan for the new hazard. A safe clear with slightly lower damage is better than a perfect elemental build that spends half the fight healing. Read the Radiant species guide.
Preparation
Rathian checklist
- Dragon is the best element; Thunder and Water are viable.
- Sever the tail to remove the poison sweep.
- Move sideways when the head lifts for the backflip.
- Bring antidotes or Poison Resistance.
First-clear rule
Pick one break, one element and one safe punish. Do not try to optimize the entire hunt before you have survived it once.
